    Kirriemuir

    The nearest larger town, ‘Kirrie is famous as the birthplace of Peter Pan author J.M. Barrie, and also the birthplace of Bon Scott- the original singer from AC/DC. Every May, Bonfest celebrates this famous son with a music festival in the town. There is a good play park at the Camera Obscura, in addition to many small independent shops and a good size supermarket. Kirrie is about 10 minutes fom the farm.

    Glamis Castle

    Glamis Castle is situated beside the village of Glamis and is the home of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and is open to the public. Glamis Castle was the childhood home of the late Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. Tours of the castle are available, whilst Bothy Gin is make just across the road. The castle is about 15 minutes from the farm.

    Lintrathen Loch

    This stunning inland loch is set among the foothills of the Braes of Angus and close to the fertile farmlands of Strathmore. Along with the larger Backwater Reservoir, Lintrathen supplies water to the nearby towns of Angus. Paddleboarding, canoeing and fishing are all popular on the Loch. Bike hire is also available. About 5 minutes from the farm.

    The Barrie Box is filled straight from the fields with amazing produce, along with produce from neighbours and other small businesses. Lovely berry ice cream, fruit & veg, bread and pies are all available. About 20 minutes from Hillockbrae. Check Facebook for opening times.

    Forfar

    A larger town about 20 minutes from the farm. Has larger shops including a bigger Tesco, McDonalds and a farmer’s market every other Saturday. The Murton Trust nature reserve is a good place to spot red squirels and Forfar sports centre has a swimming pool.

    Golf

    There are many golf courses near the farm, Blairgowrie probably being the most highly rated, and about 20 minutes away. Alyth and Glen Isla courses are both a bit nearer

    Walks and treks

    The Angus Glens… Glen Clova is the best known, steep-sided and majestic, whilst Glen Esk in the east is long and enchanting. To the west are Glen Prosen and Glen Isla - less visited perhaps but equally deserving of an exploration on foot. Reekie Linn waterfall is well worth a visit.     Food

    Nearest cafes are at Wee Bear and Peel Farm- the latter also having a nature trail and good gift shop. Wood fired pizza is available from Dough Dough Pizza Co and Magic 5- check Facebook for opening times/ locations. Alyth has a good fish & chip shop, whilst further afield is the Meikleour Arms. Perth and Dundee both have Michelin rated restaurants.

    Denhead farm shop

    Well stocked farm shop outside of Coupar Angus, open till late on a honesty box basis. Asparagus and strawberries are specialities, but they also sell bread, pastries, pizza and vegetables.

    Airlie Monument

    The Airlie Monument was erected in memory of the 11th Earl of Airlie who was killed in the Boer War on 11th June 1900. The ceremony of laying the memorial stone took place on 2nd September 1901.. The majority of the stonework of the monument was taken from Herdhill Quarry Kirriemuir. It is 65 feet high and is 1230 feet above sea level.

    Backwater Reservoir

    Opened in 1969, Backwater Reservoir links with Lintrathen Reservoir supplies water to almost 300,000 people in Dundee and otter towns of Angus. The 800-m long dam wall retains a man-made loch 2 miles in length, containing approximately 25 million cubic metres of water. The perimeter of the reservoir is popular walking route. The reservoir is about 20 minute from our farm.

    Brechin Steam Railway

    Caledonian Railway is a heritage steam railway which runs for 4 miles from a unique Victorian terminus station at Brechin to Bridge of Dun. Originally built in 1848, Caledonian Railway is today a classic preserved railway and one of the most successful attractions in Angus. Brechin is about half an hour from Hillockbrae.

    Lunan Bay

    This stunning east-facing beach, about an hour from Hillockbrae, is regularly voted one of the best in Scotland. From its northern end at Boddin Point, Lunan Bay extends two miles south. The crumbling ruin of Red Castle stands on elevated ground overlooking the Bay and dates from the 12th century.

    Cairngorms National Park

    The Cairngorms National Park has more mountains, forest paths, rivers, lochs, wildlife hotspots and friendly villages than you can possibly imagine. You can find five of the UK's six highest mountains here, alongside 55 Munros. The edge of the National Park is about half an hour from us.

    Peter Pan Playpark

    Neverland Play Park was opened as part of a project commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of J M Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan, who was born in Kirriemuir. Beside the Neverland Play Park is Kirriemuir Camera Obscura – one of only three in Scotland – housed in a purpose-designed turret room in the Barrie Pavilion on Kirrie Hill. It provides a fascinating glimpse of historic technology and striking views of the surrounding countryside.

    Murton Nature Reserve

    Murton has a well maintained network of paths which provides walks that everyone can enjoy. The lochs and wetlands are home to a variety of birds and wildfowl, including many protected species such as the Little Ringed Plover. There are three hides from where you can watch our resident and visiting birds, so be sure to bring your binoculars. There is a farm on site and also a good cafe.

    Country Parks

    Camperdown Country Park is about 35 minutes away and includes a wildlife centre and Camperdown House. Crombie Country Park is 40 minutes north of us and has a mountain bike track and adventure playground.

    Scone Palace

    Scone Palace is a stunning building with over 1000 years of history and home to the original Stone of Destiny. The Palace is surrounded by beautiful gardens and peaceful woodland- all under the watchful eye of the ever curious peacocks. There's a great adventure playground for children, not to mention the unique 'tartan' maze of 2,000 beech trees. There is a Gift Shop, Food Shop, Old Servants Hall Coffee Shop and the Old Kitchen Coffee Shop and Scone Palace is Dog Friendly.
